The above-listed hardware requirements allow you to audit approximately 5000 targets, per connector instance. The number of connectors required is not strictly based on system resources and the number of systems you are auditing. You also need to consider the need to support geographically separated data centers, regions. The connector should be installed as close as possible, within the network to your largest vCenter.
The Densify Connector, once installed and configured on or near your vCenter Server, collects data from your vCenters. The connector bundles the collected data and then uploads it to your Densify instance, where it is analyzed.
The connector uses port 80 to communicate with your configured vCenters and with your Densify instance. Alternatively, you can use port 443, if you are using HTTPS for security. This is the most common use case.
You can install the connector on either side of your firewall. Again, the most common use case, to reduce latency between the connector and your vCenters is to install the connector within your internal network behind the firewall. Your network administrator can provide guidance. Port 80 or 443 must be open in both directions.

The connector initiates the connection to a vCenter to start data collection through port 80 or 443 using TCP bi-directionally. Data collection usually starts, nightly, just past midnight after the vCenter has completed the daily data rollup.
The connector then initiates a connection to your Densify instance to upload the collected data for analysis. Densify then detects the data has been sent and loads the data to its local database and begins the analysis automatically. Reports will be available in the Densify Console, within a few hours.
Internet Connectivity
The Densify Connector must have 24 hour by 7 days/week connectivity to the internet.
vCenter Connectivity
The Densify Connector must have continuous access to the vCenter Servers/vROps, for daily audits.
Your Densify Connector must be in the same time zone as your vCenter Server. If your vCenter Servers are in different time zones, then configure a Densify Connector for each vCenter. You do not have the ability to offset the hours in the data collection audit template to compensate for different time zones.
Licensing and Number of Systems
Densify trials are limited to 2000 systems.Contact [email protected] to increase your limit if required.

The Densify Connector uses the VMware common API interface to audit each vCenter Server and ESX servers. The following prerequisites must be addressed before you can connect and collect the data required for analyses.

Supported Versions of PowerCLI
PowerCLI is required for Action automation only. If you are not deploying action automation, you do not require PowerCLI.
Prior to installing or upgrading the PowerCLI version on your Densify Connector, please check Densify Connector Compatibility. Running a PowerCLI version that is incompatible with the Densify Connector may result in Action Automation failing to execute.
In general you want the latest version of the Densify Connector that meets your requirements.

Performing Data Collection and Analysis
You require a non-expiring, read-only account with permission to log in to vCenter Server through the vCenter Server client. Through this account you must be able to view the data centers, clusters, hosts and VMs, to be audited.
Verify that you can successfully log in to vCenter Server and navigate the inventory hierarchy tree. The data center to be audited, hosts and VMs, as well as their respective details, should be visible (read-only) to this user account.

The workload statistical settings must be configured in vCenter Server to ensure that the required metrics are collected during an audit and that sufficient data coverage is maintained for Densify analyses.
The workload statistical settings must be configured in vCenter Server and optionally vROps to ensure that memory workloads are collected and that sufficient data is collected for Densify analyses.
You must configure these default settings correctly, otherwise:
- Memory workload will not be collected;
- You may not have a full 24 hours of data on which to base your analyses.
The workload statistics should be set as follows:

Level 1 is required if you are collecting data from both vCenter and vROps. Note: Depending on your version of both vROps and vCenter, you may need additional permissions to collect the metrics required by Densify. See Connector Prerequisites. Level 2 is required if you are collecting data from vCenter only. This level is required to collect active memory and the disk and network I/O metrics required for Densify analyses. If saving statistical logs for 2 days is not possible, then the default data retention period remains at 1 day, and the audit must be scheduled correctly, in order to capture the last 24-hours of data. |
1Active memory is the amount of memory that is never swapped. Starting in vROps 6.7 and 7.0, the "Active Memory" metric has been replaced by "Needed Memory" and the "Memory Ballooning" metric has been replaced by "Memory Contention". See Connector Prerequisites.
By default, for vCenter and vROps the statistical level is set to the minimum (Level 1). If you are not using vROps and collecting data from only vCenter then Densify recommends updating the Statistics Level to 2, if you want to collect active memory and the disk and network I/O metrics required for Densify analyses. Collecting active memory is required for VM bump-up recommendations.
The data retention period is a 24-hour moving window which in turn, requires careful scheduling to ensure that a full 24-hour day of data is captured. Setting "Save For" to 2 days is preferable and provides a more flexible time frame, in which to collect the 24-hours of data required.

Token-Based Authentication
The Densify Connector supports token-based authentication when connecting your vCenter Server to the Densify server instance. Authentication is performed through the Densify API and does not need to be configured through the Connector.
When creating connections to vROps, using token-based authentication you must enable the option in the connector. In later versions of vROps, token-based authentication is the default configuration and you must modify the vROps API service to perform basic authentication.
You require a local or a domain user account with permission to log into vRealize Operations, if you are collecting historical workload data from vROps. Refer to
Authentication
Starting in vROps Manager v8.1, basic authentication when using the REST API is deprecated and disabled in new deployments, by default. vROps installations that have been upgraded will inherit the same properties that were in use and continue to run as before.
Token-based authentication, for vRealize Operations Manager, is supported by the Densify Connector. You can enable the option when creating the connection.
For ease of use, if basic authentication is enabled on the vROps server (via the API), then you can use either basic authentication or token-based when you create the Densify connection, by enabling the setting, "Enable vROps token-based authentication ".
If basic authentication is disabled on the vROps server (by default in vROps v8.1 or later), then you must use the token-based authentication when your create the Densify connection, by using the UI setting.
Depending on your vROps version and the vCenter versions from which data is to be collected, you may need additional permissions to collect the metrics required by Densify.
Note: Not all of the required metrics are collected by default. You may need to configure additional permissions to collect "Guest|Needed memory" or "Memory|Non Zero Active (KB)". Contact your vCenter administrator to make the required changes to your vROps configuration.

When collecting data from vROps, VMware Tools must be installed on each VM within your managed environment to ensure memory metrics are collected to generate the most accurate recommendations.
VMware Tools is an add-on utility, provided by VMware, that improves VM management. You must ensure a current version of VMware Tools is installed and running. Refer to the documentation provided with your vCenter Server for installation details.
